Info: Verdala Palace was designed by Gerolamo Cassar and it is a fortified villa built by Grand Master Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle, as his summer residence in 1586. The palace consists of two floors and five-storey towers that are located at each corner of the palace. The palace is surrounded by the Buskett Gardens, the only area of woodland in Malta. The Palace underwent a series of improvements in the time of G.M. Lascaris. Verdala was turned into a prison in 1800 when the French surrendered to the British and Allied troops. In 1939, at the beginning of hostilities which led to the Second World War, the Palace was used as a repository for the principal works of art from the National Museum. In 1982 it was converted into the official Government guest house for visiting Heads of State.
